Claira Haagenstad: Watercolor Artist

Artist Statement

I’m drawn to the in-between space where realism meets whimsy and value taking a surrealist, personified approach in my art. My pieces aren’t exaggerated cartoons, nor wildlife realism. They feel like personalities with inner lives, channeling a certain nostalgia felt when we look back on children’s books. I lean into softness, both visually and emotionally. My watercolor approach stays loose and breathable, allowing texture and light to show through instead of forcing perfection. I collaborate with watercolor instead of attempting to control it. I utilize negative space to draw attention to my subject and emphasize their individuality. Presenting my subjects in negative space gives the viewer the freedom to imagine my characters in different contexts. My work is simple, yet engaging. They are humorous and fun while being understated in a way that makes their display versatile from a greeting card to home decor. 

Bio

Claira Haagenstad is an artist from Los Alamos, New Mexico, whose early creative life was shaped by her father, a former wildlife illustrator for the University of New Mexico. Growing up immersed in nature, she developed a lasting affection for wildlife and the outdoors, influences that continue to appear throughout her work. Alongside art, Claira holds a bachelor’s degree in clinical counseling psychology and is deeply interested in youth advocacy. This background informs her artistic approach, which emphasizes warmth, playfulness, and emotional accessibility. She enjoys connecting with children through art, viewing creativity as a shared space for curiosity, imagination, and joy. For Claira, art offers a lighthearted and grounding contrast to the intensity of the mental health field and serves as an important coping and restorative practice. In 2025, she relocated to Laramie, Wyoming, seeking a smaller community where she could build meaningful relationships and make a positive, lasting impact.
