Collection: Scott Galbraith - Watercolor Artist

Statement

My work explores the pull of places that shape us even when we're far from them. Utilizing watercolors, ink, and oils I explore themes of distance and longing, bridging Wyoming's wide open spaces with the coastal horizons that continue to inspire my work. Working from both memory and photos to create landscapes and imaginary scenes, I combine linework with atmospheric colors to capture how closely the high plains landscape mirrors the open ocean.

Bio

Coming from a family of artists, Scott Galbraith is a visual artist currently based in Laramie, Wyoming. His work is deeply rooted in his connection to the ocean, drawing from a life spent sailing and living on the water. Largely self-taught with supplementary classes, Galbraith finds parallels between the expansive Western skies and seascapes, mixing aspects of sailing with the untamed character of the Wild West.

Uniqueness

My pen and wash approach comes from traditional maritime sketching and I’ve begun to explore how this applies to western landscapes. The familiarity of vast open spaces, dramatic skies, and the movement of light has provided consistency, despite the subject matter. I'm also drawn to pulling together things that exist only in name, like a "prairie schooner" and imagining skippers navigating grasslands with wind-filled sails.
