From the artist:

This is an intricate graphite drawing depicting a young hare, specifically a jackrabbit, nestled quietly among the tall, green weeds. Its delicate frame is perfectly camouflaged , as the creature remains motionless, ears perked and alert, doing its utmost to avoid detection from nearby predators lurking in and around the underbrush.

Reflecting on my teenage years in the sprawling landscapes of Southeastern Montana during the early 1960's, I recall vivid conversa6ions between my father and brother about the prolific populations of jackrabbits in our region. While there presence was a spectacle of nature, these hares were also a source of frustration as their voracious appetites wreaked havoc on crops and gardens. this led to intense hunting efforts aimed at controlling their numbers and mitigating the agricultural damage they caused.

Jackrabbits are fascinating creatures that inhabit a wide range of environments across North America, from arid deserts to lush grasslands. They primarily feed on tender grasses, resilient cacti and hardy shrubs. Remarkably they obtain much of their moisture from their food sources, allowing them to thrive even in the driest conditions.

Their exceptional eyesight and acute sense of hearing are crucial adaptations that help them detect predators, such as cunning coyote, bobcat, cougar, fox and eagle that stalk them through the underbrush and out on the open prairie.

Moreover, Jackrabbits play an essential role in their ecosystems, contributing to ecological balance and enhancing the rich biodiversity characteristics of the habitats. They embody the spirit of wildness in North America
