From the artist:
Morning Catch is a meticulously crafted graphite drawing of a majestic grizzly bear skillfully fishing in a flowing river. Over the course of approximately 90 hours, I focused on capturing not only the bear's powerful form and intricate textures of its fur but also the dynamic movements of the water around it. My aim was to convey the essence of these magnificent creatures as they thrive in their natural habitat, highlighting their grace and strength.
My first encounter with a grizzly bear happened during the summer of 1967 while I was employed as a waitress at Togwotee Mountain Lodge, nestled high in Togwotee Pass, Wyoming. The lodge was a rustic haven surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the mountains. We lived in dormitories toward the back of the lodge and above the laundry area, which was on the ground level. One evening, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the ground, I ventured outside to tackle a pile of laundry. The air was crisp and filled with the earthy scents of pine and wildflowers when I suddenly notice a movement beneath the stairway. My heart raced as curiosity piqued my senses. Without thinking, I instinctively made a loud stomping noise, and to my astonishment, a juvenile grizzly bear burst out from its hiding spot. For a brief moment, we locked eyes - it's large, dark gaze filled with curiosity and perhaps a hint of caution mirroring my own surprise. Then, as quickly as it had appeared, the bear darted away into the safety of the forest nearby, leaving me momentarily breathless.
I had been cautioned numerous times about the unpredictable nature of bears in the area. Tales of unfortunate encounters where people had been harmed for underestimating these powerful creatures echoed in my mind. Grizzly bears are not just massive beasts, they embody the wild spirit of nature. I hold a profound respect for these magnificent creatures and their rightful place in the wilderness.
