From the artist:
THE SENTINEL OF THE HOLLOW: During my college years and into my seventies, I
intermittently resided on a charming farm near Chadron, Nebraska. Just beyond
the buildings, there was a substantial windbreak that provided shelter and
sanctuary for a variety of wildlife. Among them were magnificent great horned
owls, whose presence captivated me profoundly. I spent many hours observing
and photographing these majestic birds of prey, drawn in by their enigmatic
beauty.
Great horned owls, a common sight across the Nebraska landscape, are
renowned for their remarkable adaptability as apex predators. Their enormous,
tufted ears resemble the horns of a mythical creature, while their striking
plumage, a blend of browns and grays, provides perfect camouflage against the
bark of trees. With silent flight and exceptional night vision, they effortlessly hunt
prey.
Interestingly, great horned owls do not construct their nests from scratch;
instead, they often claim abandoned nests of other birds or nestle into weathered
tree hollows. Their nesting season and courtship rituals begins in January, filling
the night with deep hoots as they prepare for a new beginning each year. Every
encounter with these remarkable owls left me with a deeper appreciation for the
intricate web of life that thrived on the farm. Completed in May 2025
