Maria Elsen- Photography

Maria is a wildlife and nature photographer from Evanston, Wyoming. She is currently studying Zoology at the University of Wyoming, where her passion for animals continues to influence her artistic work. Maria has completed one photography course at Western Wyoming Community College, but the majority of her skills have been developed through self-teaching, hands-on experience, and countless hours spent photographing the natural world. Her work focuses on capturing authentic moments in wildlife and showcasing the beauty of the landscapes that surround her. In recognition of her work, two of her photographs were selected for the Western Spirit Juried Art Show. Through her photography, Maria hopes to encourage others to appreciate and protect the wildlife and natural environments that inspire her.

Artist Statement

My photography is driven by a desire to capture the beauty and personality of the natural world in moments that often go unnoticed. I am especially drawn to wildlife and nature because they offer honest, unscripted moments that can’t be recreated. Rather than forcing a scene, I prefer to observe patiently and let the subject reveal itself naturally.

When creating photographs, I focus on composition, lighting, and timing to tell a story through a single image. Whether I’m photographing a bird in flight, an animal in its habitat, or the details of a landscape, I aim to create images that encourage viewers to slow down and appreciate the world around them. I enjoy highlighting the unique characteristics of each subject while preserving the authenticity of the moment.

My process often requires patience and adaptability. Spending time outdoors allows me to anticipate behavior, work with changing light, and wait for the right opportunity rather than rushing to capture an image. Through my work, I hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for wildlife and nature while reminding viewers that extraordinary moments can be found in everyday environments if we take the time to look.
