Collection: Justin Wolf - Embossed Copper

Artist Statement:
One of the most enjoyable parts of my artistic process is researching historical art movements throughout history. This keeps me inspired, and copper, which is my primary medium, is the oldest metal working tradition on the planet. That aspect of the medium really appeals to my inner history fan.
I also celebrate nature in my work by depicting animals found throughout the western U.S and Wyoming more specifically. I sometimes even depict animals that used to be here—such as woolly mammoths.
My love of science can be seen throughout my works. Due to a little issue with colorblindness, I’ve learned to become highly experimental in the ways I bring color to my work. I rely on chemicals and flame painting primarily but sometimes use paints to heighten contrast or highlight certain elements of a particular piece.

Artist Bio:
I grew up in Worland, Wyoming. My artistic journey started with dinosaurs of all things. I was obsessed with them and drew them constantly to the point where all the teachers at my elementary school got together to buy me an art kit. In high school I took an advanced art class where I learned how to emboss copper, even winning best-of-show for a Van Gogh inspired sunflower piece. After high school, my creative side went into temporary hibernation due to college and my work as a wildland firefighter. After that chapter of my life, I ran into some adversity and turned back to art as a coping mechanism. I quickly became obsessed and couldn’t stop, so here I am.
